About our Workshops

Supporting our Local Hospitals Battling COVID-19
In these challenging times, we've decided to offer our summer workshops online this year and we will donate the proceeds to hospitals on the front lines battling the COVID-19 crisis.
Expert Instructors
Almost all of our instructors are high schoolers who are alumni of the Kennedy Science Olympiad team and have competed at the Science Olympiad National Tournament. We're excited to share our passion for science with younger students through these workshops.
Wide Range of Topics
We're excited to offer new Math and Physical Science workshops this summer, in addition to offer our popular workshops which cover a wide range of different topics and fields. Feel free to sign up for whichever ones interest you!

Biological Science Primer: High School Biology Preview

Description
This workshop series is for incoming freshman at Monta Vista: The 9th Grade Biology Preview, taught by high-performing Biology students. Consisting of 7 sessions and a student panel discussing each teacher’s unique class styles at the end, these workshops are offered to give soon to be high schoolers an overview of the 9th grade Biology course in order to ease the stress most people have when entering high school, as well as boosting one’s knowledge of the subject to decrease the amount one has to learn during the school year. Biology is a fascinating and complex field and it shouldn’t have to give a student anxiety or stress, thus having the knowledge and confidence going into high school will greatly reduce any feelings of anxiety or stress and drastically improve one’s overall mental health.

Biological Science Primer: Fundamentals of Human Anatomy & Physiology

Description
This comprehensive workshop series is designed to introduce students to the structure and function of the human body organized around several major human anatomical systems. This course will enable the student to understand the structures that make up the human body systems and the basic principles of how they function on both the micro and macro level. This course will focus on not only individual body systems but also enable students to develop an understanding of the relationships between the structures and functions of the human body. For the biology workshops, no prior knowledge of biological sciences is required. We will cover the foundational concepts required to delve into Human Anatomy & Physiology as well as other biological content at the beginning of the course.
Schedule
June 5 - July 19, 2020, Friday & Saturday, Workshop hours: 4:30 - 6:00 PM PST

Physical Science Primer: Fundamentals of Physics and Chemistry (Sections 1 and 2)

Description
Physics and chemistry are two of the most popular science courses at the high school level. In this comprehensive 3-week series of workshops, students will acquire a strong foundation of knowledge and will apply what they learn to solve problems, which will introduce them to high school-level science and allow further exploration of the physical world.

The physics workshops will use an algebra-based approach to investigate motion: both how to describe it (position, velocity, acceleration) and explain it (forces and Newton's laws). We will also be carrying out investigations on momentum, energy, circular motion, and Kepler's laws.  In the chemistry workshops, we will start with an exploration of atomic structure and periodicity, and continue on to chemical bonding, states of matter, stoichiometry, reaction kinetics, redox reactions, acids/bases, and fundamental organic chemistry. We will also be covering thermodynamics in uniquely combined workshops between physics and chemistry. A review of the math necessary for these workshops is included for free.
