Summer Session 2 Workshop Descriptions

All About The Cell
Taught by Deetshana Parthipan
Learn about the complex science behind an unimaginably tiny, 100 micrometer unit, which defines our very existence. So tiny that 10,000 of these stunning structures could fit on the tip of a pin! Yes, I’m talking about the cell! We’ll take a tour around this thrilling creation and learn all about it! Join the fun!
Genetic Disorders
Taught by Deetshana Parthipan
Why does my friend just have to be so much taller than me! Not fair! Well it’s not really your fault, just blame it all on genetics! But on a more serious note, why is it that some people are born with malfunctioning hearts and extra fingers. Sadly, once again, blame it on genetics. Learn about the basics of genetics and it’s role in determining genetic disorders.
Why do bats carry so many viruses?
Taught by Aseem Rajopadhye
Bats, the only mammals capable of flight, are known to carry and transmit some of the deadliest zoonotic viruses including Ebola, Marburg, Nipah and SARS Coronavirus. Researchers have been puzzled by the bats' super-tolerance as they don't appear to get sick by these microscopic parasites. This presentation will look into the reasons that make bats a perfect virus host.
Intro to Crytograpghy
Taught by Eric Ju
With the widespread use of technology, it is important to encrypt messages in order to protect it from people who want to steal your information. Learn about some of the simple ways messages can be encrypted and learn how to decrypt messages as well.
Introduction to Cognitive Science

Taught by Anusha Chittari
Students will learn how to simulate agents to complete goal oriented tasks as well as a variety of natural systems from physics and biology. Throughout the workshop we will go over examples of computational models of cognition. By the end of the workshop students will gain an understanding of dynamical systems theory and its relation to cognitive science.

The Secrets of Our Changing Oceans
Taught by Nishanth Arumugam
Learn about the influence of pollutants in marine ecosystems, and how to keep the world a cleaner home.
Plant Anatomy
Taught by Deetshana Parthipan
Join this course to immerse yourself in the world of plant biology! Learn about plant structure, growth, and development, as well as associated biotechnology and more!
Genetics of Cancer
Taught by Aseem Rajopadhye
A short introduction cancer cells, MicroRNA, genes, and cancer genome
The Uses of Biotechnology
Taught by Angela Zhang
When you think of the technologically advanced future, biotechnology is definitely something to look at. Whether it's inventing golden rice or creating designer babies, biotechnology is and will be the cause of important biological creations now and in the future. So get a step ahead of your peers and learn all about the basics biotechnology now in this class.
Fun Reactions
Taught by Amol Rama
Chemistry is the one science that is described as people mixing two vials of chemical substances and BAM! A new thing forms! Let’s experiment with different exotic chemical reactions!
The Digestive System and Nutrition Science
Taught by Eshani Patel
Learn about the various processes and organs of the digestive system that help maintain the body’s homeostasis, as well as the disorders of the system and how they can be treated. Additionally, learn about biomolecules and how they are processed in the digestive system, and focus on nutrients and different food groups that make up our diet and how each affects our health.
Digital Forensics (Computer)
Taught by Arthur Perng
It's not what it looks like! As part of cyber security, digital forensics and live analysis on media to extract hidden information is crucial. In this workshop, students will learn to encrypt and decrypt messages in many different types of media forms.
Endocrinolgy
Taught by Eshani Patel
Learn about the the major organs of the endocrine system and their functions, the various hormones that maintain our homeostasis, the chemical signaling process of hormones, and the variety of disorders that can arise when the endocrine system is disturbed.
Movie Editing
Taught by Conner Yin
Want to learn how to put multiple videos side by side or how to use greenscreen effects? Want to learn how to make more than just slideshow-type videos? Then this workshop is just right for you!
Lemon Power
Taught by Dylan Yang
Batteries are an essential part of our modern lives, found everywhere from pocket calculators to Tesla cars. But how do they really work? In this workshop, we will build a battery using household materials together, and explore the science behind why batteries work the way they do and get to know each components of a battery.
Natural selection and genetics
Taught by Varun Kumaravelu
What accounts for the immense biodiversity that exists within our planet?

About our Workshops

Supporting our Local Hospitals Battling COVID-19
In these challenging times, we've decided to offer our spring workshops online this year and we will donate the proceeds to hospitals on the front lines battling the COVID-19 crisis.
Expert Instructors
Almost all of our instructors are high schoolers who are alumni of the Kennedy Science Olympiad team and have competed at the Science Olympiad National Tournament. We're excited to share our passion for science with younger students through these workshops.
Wide Range of Topics
In parallel to the many different scientific disciplines explored in Science Olympiad, we're excited to be offering 22 different workshops covering a wide range of different topics and fields. Feel free to sign up for whichever ones interest you!

Please feel free to send us an email if you are interested in joining us.
